But a higher GSM does not always mean a better blanket. The right choice depends on the season, intended use, and target market.
What Does GSM Mean?
GSM stands for grams per square meter. It tells you how much one square meter of fabric weighs.
For example, a 300 GSM polyester blanket uses more material per square meter than a 200 GSM blanket. In general, a higher GSM creates a thicker and warmer feel, while a lower GSM produces a lighter blanket.
Common GSM Ranges for Polyester Blankets
150–200 GSM: Lightweight
Blankets in this range are light, easy to fold, and convenient to carry. They can be a good choice for warmer climates, travel, promotional products, and budget-friendly retail ranges.
200–300 GSM: Versatile Everyday Use
This is a practical range for many polyester fleece blankets. It offers a good balance between warmth, softness, weight, and cost.
These blankets are suitable for sofas, beds, offices, hotels, and general home use.
300 GSM and Above: Warmer and Heavier
Higher-GSM blankets usually have a fuller and more substantial feel. They are often chosen for colder seasons or product ranges positioned toward comfort and warmth.
However, higher GSM also means more material, greater shipping weight, and usually a higher product cost.
Is Higher GSM Always Better?
Not necessarily.
GSM only measures fabric weight. It does not tell you everything about the quality of a blanket.
Two 300 GSM blankets may feel completely different because of differences in:
Polyester yarn quality/ Fabric construction/ Brushing and finishing/ Density/ Softness
Edge workmanship/ Pilling resistance
A well-made 250 GSM blanket may offer a better hand feel and overall performance than a poorly finished 300 GSM product.
How Should Buyers Choose?
Start with the intended use of the blanket.
For a lightweight promotional or travel blanket, a lower GSM may be more practical. For everyday home use, a medium GSM can provide a good balance of comfort and cost. For winter collections, a heavier fabric may be more suitable.
Wholesale buyers should also consider shipping costs. Increasing GSM adds weight to every piece, which can make a significant difference in a large order.

When developing a custom polyester blanket, GSM should be considered together with size, fabric type, color, printing, edge finishing, logo, label, and packaging.
The goal is not simply to choose the highest GSM. It is to find the right combination of comfort, warmth, appearance, durability, and cost for your market.
